| A written strategic plan that has employee commitment to is extremely important for a business. It allows the business and its employees to verify that it is accomplishing the right results as well as giving them a finish line that motivates them to the right actions. We find many businesses where:
- The owner must push to get action taken (instead of the employees working together towards a common goal).
- The employees do not buy into the vision (they have not had an opportunity to provide feedback regarding the strategy or they lack confidence that management has explored other possibilities).
- The vision is not motivating (the vision sounds good, but does not tie back into an understandable, exciting, clear daily or weekly action plan).
- The strategy is off gathering dust (it was a one time push to get words on paper and not a living breathing document used to guide the business with all of its wisdom).
In order to determine if a strategy is working, you need to evaluate your strategic plan annually, just like you evaluate your employees, to identify how you can improve its performance. Attached is the The Strategic Plan Scorecard. It is designed for you to use with your core team to have them evaluate your strategic plan and identify how to make it work better going forward.
Whether or not you have a strategic plan in writing, use the attached form for getting yourself and your employees moving forward on your strategy so it becomes a motivating, living, breathing tool for improving your team and your business.
