THE WORRY MANUAL
What You Should Do When Times Get Tough

In the old days when we lived in the jungle and swung from trees, “fight or flight” probably worked pretty well.  These days, “fight or flight” can make situations worse and damage relationships.  “Fight or flight” can keep us digging out for years after a series of events.  Much like a worry stone, a “Worry Manual” is a place to turn for good advice on what to do when things gets tough.

Instead of using “fight or flight” methods, we need to identify actions and mental models that are more likely to help us take advantage of a tough situation.  Some of my best and most profitable relationships and results have come from difficult circumstances.  One way we work with clients is to help them build a “Worry Manual”.  Below are some tools I use from my own “Worry Manual”:

  1. Remember where you came from: Looking back, you may be surprised at how far you have come.  Focus on the progress you have made.  Identify what made you unique through the years.  Identify what is solid about the foundation that you have.
  2. Harvest the wisdom you have learned and teach it to others:  This will cause you to be better at what you are already great at doing.  It will allow you to have deeper conversations with others, align them more closely with your vision and create stronger relationships.
  3. Imagine your future:  This will keep you focused on the most powerful actions you can take.  Employees will be more emotionally engaged with a clearer vision of the future. The vision will help you more clearly identify critical resources that you will need to succeed at a higher level.
  4. Focus on opportunities (not uncontrollables):  Energy is focused on what will make a difference.  Threats and weaknesses can be overpowered.  Progress has a better chance by taking larger leaps.  Additional resources, motivation and opportunities will be available.
  5. Grow your capabilities and value delivery:  As your deliver value, appreciation from others helps to dissolve worry.  Stronger capabilities decrease fear and inactivity.  Learn what brings additional wisdom and results that can carry you through tough times as well as engage your people emotionally.
  6. Be emotionally and mentally present, right now:  This will help you to enjoy life more, produce better results and bring others with you to a better future.  This is a great habit and skill to use at any time to ensure that you have great relationships that continue to improve.
  7. Share your purpose and meaning:  This adds additional depth to your own motivation and will attract other like minded people to your cause.  Your purpose and meaning can keep you going in the worst circumstances and allow you to reach great heights that you never thought possible.

Every successful business and business owner has had to experience exceptionally difficult circumstances.  Tough situations that were handled well and with the right attitude helped to create successes for the business owners and their team.  What is it that your tough times will allow you to learn to give you a better and brighter future?
