THE RIFLE AND THE SHOTGUN

Aligning Your People As A Team

Many of us have built our businesses by working hard and we did whatever was needed to get the results.  This sometimes is called The Shotgun approach to doing business.  Much may be happening, but is everyone’s activity directed towards the most effective goal with the best methods?  Working together as a team towards a common specific goal can be as powerful, if not more powerful than simply working hard.  This is known as The Rifle Approach to building a more effective business.

By working as a focused team, better results are created much more quickly with fewer mistakes.  Increased cash flow, added business value and larger financial resources are great benefits as an owner.  Your team gets increased satisfaction from the results (as long as they get the credit), better information for tactical decisions they make daily, as well as increased resources (ranging from better equipment to bonus to profit sharing etc.).  This success feeds on itself and builds a geometrically more powerful business engine over time.

The Team Assessment that we use below is part of our 3rd meeting with a team.  It is a way of taking some of the nebulous “team values” and getting them into a measurable format.  It also provides a discussion piece for members of the team to share their “rating” of each element of the team and provide examples of where they see the team can do better, as well as examples of what your team is doing well and needs to continue doing.  By using the assessment annually, we can also ensure that all areas are improving, rather that simply focusing on what appears to be the biggest problem at that time.

The terms “team building”, “communication” and others like them are overused and too general.  The Team Assessment allows us to measure increased results of the elements of a team.  This begins with the team’s perception of their methods and helps them to articulate concrete actions that produce positive progress towards a better future.  Giving lip service to “team building” does not work.  Looking as a team at the actual specific recipe that you are using is how you create an actionable plan of progress for better business results and high performance.
